What is Blue to you?
Did you know that since June 8th 2018, Bonaire officially has the title of First Blue Destination of the world, which is extremely befitting for the Island? You will notice this especially while flying above Bonaire; the vibrant colours and diversity of our landscape. However, there is more.
Bonaire’s unique culture, nature and economy go hand in hand, creating a tranquil and relaxed atmosphere that is loved by so many of our visitors. The aqua-blue sea, fresh air and the constant cool winds are all elements that make Bonaire one of a kind. On top of this we are constantly busy thinking about eco-friendly solutions and implementing (i.e. the use of solar and aquatic energy).
The inhabitants of our island have always had a close connection with the sea; they learn from it, relax in it and ensure that the sea and its nature are conserved well. This is what the blue part in Bonaire’s flag represents. Did you know that we were (one of ) the first lsland(s) that declared the whole surrounding marine park as a protected area? In 2019 it will be 40 years ago already! We are extremely proud of that status! We have our national pride that can walk and fly around freely; the flamingo, and the turtles and dolphins that swim around freely, all we monitor and conserve rigorously. However, did you know that on top of conserving our reefs, we are also repairing old and growing new reefs? Coral restoration Foundation Bonaire is busy with this non-stop because we realize the importance for the island and its inhabitants.
We on bonaire do not mass-fish with big nets, destroying all marine-life on its path. We fish in small boats, the old-fashioned way (line and hook) out of respect for our ocean. The fish we serve you at It Rains Fishes is caught this way too. During the late evening-hours and early morning hours the fishermen catch, and in the morning our cooks clean the fish. This gives you the purest taste of Blue Destination Bonaire. We realize that our nature and ocean are inseparably connected to our economy and our inhabitants. That’s why we, at It Rains Fishes, operate with a vigorous focus on our Blue Destination. You will not encounter plastic straws, cups or bags (the so-called single-use plastics) that are so damaging to our nature and ocean, not just here but globally! We have “blue-friendly” alternatives in the form of paper straws, biologically degradable to-go boxes etc. Especially the small things, such as single-use plastics, can have such a huge impact
on the island’s nature. We hereby minimize the waste on Bonaire and ensure that our nature keeps gracing us with its unique beauty. With this in mind, we ensure that Bonaire becomes a bit more “Blue” every day.
We hope to hereby inspire you in becoming more “blue-aware”. Now rests the question; What is blue to you?
